Medical Supplements Can Rewrite Your Athletic Career
by Larry Turner

In a previous issue, I wrote about an injury to my leg sustained when trying to respond to my alarm clock. Fast forward and that injury was finally addressed by a Wound Care Center in Boca Raton and something happened during that series of treatments that was quite interesting.

Dr. S, we’ll call him, was assigned to my case and, during one of my appointments, he said that I must have been an elite athlete in my day because of the speed with which my skin was regenerating and quickly covering the hole left in my leg from my injury. I played a lot of sports when I was young, rode jumping horses, and ran marathons, but by no means was I ever considered an “elite” athlete.

Several treatments later, the nurse mentioned to Dr. S that the skin was about to come together from both sides of the hole left by the wound but for some reason had encountered something that caused it to pause further growth. He examined the situation and asked the nurse to put a small flake of collagen at the point in question and explained that the skin should grow over the flake and the flake itself would dissolve into the wound and assist in the healing process.

Later that day I put two and two together regarding collagen. I drink a collagen power every day at the suggestion of our daughter and that supplement is said to strengthen bones, heal joints, and contribute to a healthier skin. The “flake” inserted on top of my wound was intended to induce the skin to continue to grow across it to close the wound to complete the treatment. My morning beverage was a collagen supplement and the flake was a collagen compound. Coincidence? I don’t think so.
