Alarm Clocks Can Be Dangerous To Your Health
by Larry Turner

The title of this article says a lot about my age, since alarm clocks are passe’ in today’s culture in favor of iPhones and other electronic devices.  Also, have you noticed that this writer seems to have an inordinate number of problems to write about?  Whatever!

The backstory for this article occurred nearly a decade ago with a small boating accident that left me with a torn groin muscle in my right leg and an accumulation of blood in the leg which has lasted until now.  The leg was dark with pooled blood, the skin was thin and, as a result, tender.  As an aside, for anyone begging to know, you can still see through your glasses when you fall deep into the canal water from the deck of a large Great Lakes vessel.

So, the story begins with my body sporting a rather sound but fragile right leg for the reasons given. Shortly before the event transpired that gave rise to this story, my left leg became infected causing water to form small water balloons under the skin. Elevating the leg coupled with a regimen of different strengths of Lasik had just created the desired drying process and I was about to say goodbye to that medical issue for good.

Then I turned in for a night and, because I wanted to rise and shine early enough to prepare for departing the house for an early appointment, I set the alarm on my iPhone to notify me of the time to begin the day.  As I was enjoying a rare but sound slumber, the alarm rang, I was surprised by the interruption, my right leg swung to search for the floor and, in doing so, the mid-leg area jammed into my left kneecap causing a large blood blister on my right leg that continued to grow as I rushed to prepare for the day’s first appointment.

Every family member proffered their best medical advice on how to deal with the injury and, eventually, I visited a local Urgent Care Center to convince myself that how I was treating the blister would eventually result in a cure.

I am still awaiting a clean bill of health for both legs, but when I receive it and for many years thereafter I will refrain from setting what I still refer to as my alarm clock for any reason.  I have already proved that those things can be dangerous!
