Exuma Cay is popular with many celebrities including Johnny Depp, Nicholas Cage and David Copperfield. The Islands of the Bahamas are loved by so many. Part of the allure is the shallow, clear water and beautiful beaches Another part is the Bahamian culture. I would be negligent not to mention all the delicious cuisine in the Bahamas from fresh conch to lobster to a wonderful selection of local fish. The fresh conch salad, peas and rice and Johnny cake are favorites too. And, if you never tried Guava Duff, you need to experience it on your next trip to the Bahamas.
In addition to the tourists and residents that make the Bahamas a world class destination, it is also the uniqueness and charm of some of the “Out Islands”.
Exuma is often referred to as “Pig Island” because of groups of pigs that can be found there. There’s even a beach named for them, “Pig Beach”. The pigs are often seen swimming and it is a sight that is surprisingly delightful.
From mainland Exuma there are boat excursions to Big Major Cay, which is the official name of Pig Island, where you will find the swimming pigs. This small uninhabited island is popular with boaters. Once a boat approaches the island the pigs will come out of the bushes and onto the beach. Don’t be surprised when you see them swimming out to your boat because they are looking for food. So be prepared and bring some extra food.
